The Translation

“The Vedas deal mainly with the three modes of material nature. Rise above these three modes, O Arjuna. Be free from all dualities, established in absolute truth, free from anxieties of acquisition and preservation, and self-possessed.”

Commentary & Insights

Krishna urges Arjuna to rise above the three Gunas (modes of nature: Sattva, Rajas, Tamas) that govern the material world and establish himself in pure consciousness.

Practical Application
1

Practice letting go of the need to protect your ego or possessions today. When someone disagrees with you, choose not to defend yourself aggressively; stay poised.

Self-Reflection Prompts
  • In what areas of your life are you experiencing 'yoga-kṣema' anxiety (worrying about getting and keeping things)? How can you practice letting go?
  • What does it mean to be 'self-possessed' (ātmavān) when surrounded by chaotic or stressful circumstances?
