“The unreal has no existence, and the real never ceases to be. The truth of both has been perceived by the seers of the essence.”

Having listened to Arjuna's arguments for refusing to fight, Krishna begins his philosophical instruction. He addresses Arjuna's confusion by clarifying the distinction between the temporary and the eternal, helping him understand the true nature of existence on the battlefield of Kurukshetra.

नासतो विद्यते भावो नाभावो विद्यते सतः
The unreal (body, senses) has no independent existence because it is a modification (vikara) of the real. The only true existence is Brahman/Atman, which remains unchanged in all three periods of time (past, present, future).
