The Translation
“I do not see how I can dispel this grief that is drying up my senses, even if I should obtain an unrivaled, prosperous kingdom on earth and sovereignty over the gods.”
Commentary & Insights
Arjuna explains the depth of his crisis. He realizes that his grief is internal and cannot be cured by external achievements. Even if he were to win an unrivaled, wealthy kingdom on earth (ṛddhaṃ rājyam) or sovereignty over the gods in heaven (surāṇām api ca ādhipatyam), his mind would still be in torment.

Arjuna's statement is the starting point of search for Self-knowledge. He realizes that even the status of Indra (sovereignty over gods) is temporary and subject to decay, and therefore cannot solve the problem of death and sorrow.
