The Translation

“Sanjaya said: Having spoken thus on the battlefield, Arjuna cast aside his bow and arrows and sat down in the chariot, his mind overwhelmed with grief.”

Commentary & Insights

This is the final verse of Chapter 1, summarizing Arjuna's complete breakdown. He throws down his bow, Gandiva, and arrows, and collapses onto the seat of the chariot, his heart filled with sorrow (śokasaṃvignamānasaḥ). The chapter ends in heavy silence, with the great hero refusing to fight, setting the stage for Sri Krishna's response in Chapter 2.

Practical Application
1

Acknowledge your current limits without shame. Sometimes, sitting down and admitting you are overwhelmed is the necessary prelude to receiving guidance.

Self-Reflection Prompts
  • Reflect on a time when a personal crisis or breakdown became a turning point for your growth. How did that happen?
  • Why is it necessary to 'cast aside our bow' (admit our limitations) before we can receive deeper guidance?
