The Translation
“Alas! What a great sin we are prepared to commit, driven by the greed for royal happiness, by being ready to kill our own kinsmen.”
Commentary & Insights
Arjuna expresses deep self-condemnation. He blames himself and his brothers for being ready to commit a 'great sin' (mahat pāpam) out of greed (lobha) for royal power and comforts (rājyasukha). He feels that their desire to fight is selfish.

अहो बत महत्पापं कर्तुं व्यवसिता वयम्
Arjuna's self-blame is another manifestation of his ego. He thinks: 'I am the one committing this sin.' True freedom comes from understanding that the Self (Atman) is neither the doer nor the reaper of sins.
