उत्सन्नकुलधर्माणां मनुष्याणां जनार्दन | नरके नियतं वासो भवतीत्यनुशुश्रुम (or नरकेऽनियतं) ||१-४४||

The Translation

“O Janardana, we have heard from the sages that those whose family traditions are destroyed must dwell in hell for an indefinite time.”

Commentary & Insights

Arjuna refers to scriptural authorities (anuśuśruma - we have heard from teachers) to back up his claim that those who destroy family traditions will dwell in hell (naraka) indefinitely. He is attempting to use the fear of spiritual damnation to justify his refusal to fight.
