Verse 1.11 : Arjuna Vishada Yoga "The Grief of Arjuna"

Duryodhana instructs his generals to support and guard Bhishma, the commander-in-chief, recognizing that their entire army's success hinges on his survival and strength. Despite his boasts of their army being unlimited, he knows that Bhishma is their single greatest asset, and if Bhishma falls, the army will collapse.

This verse represents the ego's anxiety about protecting its primary defenses. Bhishma represents the grandfather figure—traditional, conditioning, and outdated dogmas that the ego relies on to justify its existence. The ego commands all its forces to protect this conditioning because without it, the false self cannot survive.

When our beliefs are challenged, we often deploy all our mental energy to defend our conditioning, biases, and habits (our 'Bhishma'). We protect them because they define our current comfort zone. This verse invites us to ask: Are we guarding outdated habits that hold us back, simply because they are familiar?
