Verse 1.40 : Arjuna Vishada Yoga "The Grief of Arjuna"
“With the destruction of the family, the eternal family traditions (kula-dharma) are ruined. When traditions are lost, the entire family is overcome by lawlessness.”
Arjuna presents a sociological argument. He points out that when the male members of a family are killed, the family structure collapses. This leads to the destruction of ancient family traditions (kula-dharma), which keep society structured and moral. Without these traditions, lawlessness (adharma) takes over the remaining family members, leading to social collapse.
When worrying about the future collapse of systems or traditions, focus on upholding your personal integrity in the present moment.
- What are the core moral and spiritual traditions of your family or community that you value most? How do you protect them?
- Have you ever had to disrupt a comfortable system or relationship to stand up for a higher truth? What did you learn?

Arjuna's focus is entirely on the conservation of social structures. He does not yet understand that the highest Dharma is not social conservation, but spiritual liberation (Moksha) and alignment with the Divine will.
