The Translation

“Gradually, step by step, one should attain quietude by means of the intellect sustained by steadiness. Having fixed the mind on the Self alone, one should not think of anything else.”

Commentary & Insights

Krishna describes the gradual process of stilling the mind, instructing the yogi to use a determined intellect to fix the mind on the Self and think of nothing else.

Practical Application
1

When meditating or working today, accept that thoughts will arise. Gently and patiently return your focus to your breath or task each time, without frustration.

Self-Reflection Prompts
  • Why is trying to force your thoughts to stop instantly during meditation usually exhausting and unsuccessful? How does the 'step-by-step' approach help?
  • What is the experience of sitting in absolute mental silence (*na kiñcid api cintayet*), even for just ten seconds?
