Verse 18.41 : Moksha Sanyasa Yoga "Liberation and Renunciation"
Verse 41 of 78
“
The Translation
“The duties of the priests (Brahmins), the warriors (Kshatriyas), the merchants (Vaishyas), and the laborers (Shudras), O Parantapa, are distributed according to the qualities born of their own nature (Gunas).”
Commentary & Insights
Krishna begins explaining the division of duties (varna) in ancient society. In the original Vedic framework, this division was not based on birth or caste, but on svabhāva—an individual's natural qualities and behavioral tendencies born of the Gunas.
Practical Application
1
Take time to understand your natural strengths and interests, rather than trying to fit into a career path that doesn't suit your temperament.

Self-Reflection Prompts
- How does defining social duties by 'inner temperament' (svabhāva) differ from a rigid, birth-based caste system? Why is the birth-based system a distortion of this verse?
- If you were to evaluate your own dominant Gunas, what kind of work (vocation) naturally aligns with your temperament?

ब्राह्मणक्षत्रियविशां शूद्राणां च परन्तप
Shankara comments that 'svabhāva' is the nature of the individual formed by the Gunas (Sattva, Rajas, Tamas) that were active at their birth due to past karma. The duties are divided to match these mental capacities: Sattva-dominated souls are fit for study/teaching (Brahmins), Rajas-dominated for administration/defense (Kshatriyas), Rajas-Tamas for trade (Vaishyas), and Tamas-dominated for labor (Shudras).
