Self-Reflection Prompts
- How does the fifth factor, 'providence' (daivam), explain why even our best plans can fail due to factors beyond our control?
- If you are only one of five factors (the agent), why do you take 100% of the pride for success and 100% of the guilt for failure?

अधिष्ठानं तथा कर्ता करणं च पृथग्विधम्
Shankara comments that the body is the seat where desire and hatred manifest. The 'kartā' is the Jiva identified with the intellect. The instruments are the ears, eyes, hands, etc. The endeavors are the internal breaths (prana, apana). 'Daiva' refers to the cosmic deities that preside over each sense organ, or past karma. Since all action is done by these five, the Atman is completely non-acting.
