“These two paths of the world, the bright and the dark, are considered eternal. By one, a person goes to return no more; by the other, one returns again.”

शुक्लकृष्णे गती ह्येते जगतः शाश्वते मते
These paths are eternal because samsara is beginningless. They represent the two choices available to human beings: the path of knowledge and devotion (jnana/bhakti) which leads to Brahman, and the path of ritualistic karma which leads to rebirth.
