The Translation
“Worship of the gods, the twice-born, the teachers, and the wise; purity, straightforwardness, celibacy, and non-injury—these are declared to constitute austerity of the body.”
Commentary & Insights
Krishna defines the first of three categories of self-discipline (tapas): the austerity of the body (śārīraṃ tapaḥ). In the Vedic framework, physical discipline was the foundation of mental control.

देवद्विजगुरुप्राज्ञपूजनं शौचमार्जवम्
Shankara comments that physical austerity is the discipline of the physical organ. Celibacy (brahmacharya) means control over sensual indulgence. Purity (shauca) includes washing the body. These acts steady the physical frame, preparing it for deeper meditation.
