The Translation

“Worship of the gods, the twice-born, the teachers, and the wise; purity, straightforwardness, celibacy, and non-injury—these are declared to constitute austerity of the body.”

Commentary & Insights

Krishna defines the first of three categories of self-discipline (tapas): the austerity of the body (śārīraṃ tapaḥ). In the Vedic framework, physical discipline was the foundation of mental control.
