Verse 17.21 : Sraddhatraya Vibhaga Yoga "Three Divisions of Faith"
Verse 21 of 28
“
The Translation
“But charity which is given with the expectation of a return, or seeking a reward, or given reluctantly and grudgingly, is declared to be in the mode of passion (Rajasic).”
Commentary & Insights
Krishna describes Rajasic charity. In the ancient world, kings and wealthy merchants often gave large donations to poets, priests, or public works in expectation of return favors, alliance, or divine credit in heaven.
Practical Application
1
When you help someone, notice if you feel resentful or expect a return favor; choose to release that expectation.

Self-Reflection Prompts
- Have you ever given a gift to someone but felt hurt when they did not give you something equal in return? How does this reveal a Rajasic motive?
- Why does giving with regret (parikliṣṭam) destroy the peaceful feeling of generosity?

17.21
यत्तु प्रत्युपकारार्थं फलमुद्दिश्य वा पुनः
Shankara comments that 'parikliṣṭam' means giving with grief, thinking: 'I have lost so much money.' Alternatively, it is giving with insults or complaints. When charity is performed as a business transaction (pratyupakara) or to get fame, it is Rajasic and does not purify the heart.
