“Therefore, with the utterance of 'OM,' acts of sacrifice, charity, and austerity as ordained in scriptures are always initiated by the seekers of Brahman.”

तस्मादोमित्युदाहृत्य यज्ञदानतपःक्रियाः
Shankara comments that 'OM' represents the supreme Brahman. Uttering it at the beginning of any act of worship or scriptural study removes obstacles and infuses the action with Sattva, driving away any rajasic pride or tamasic lethargy.
