Verse 17.9 : Sraddhatraya Vibhaga Yoga "Three Divisions of Faith"
Verse 9 of 28
“
The Translation
“Foods that are bitter, sour, salty, excessively hot, pungent, dry, and burning are preferred by those in the mode of passion (Rajasic). They cause pain, grief, and disease.”
Commentary & Insights
Krishna describes Rajasic foods, which are favored by those in the mode of passion (Rajas). In ancient Vedic times, these foods were typically associated with warriors (kshatriyas) who needed quick energy, but they were recognized as unsuitable for maintaining a quiet, contemplative mind.
Practical Application
1
Reduce your intake of highly processed, excessively spicy, or sugary foods that trigger energy spikes and crashes.

Self-Reflection Prompts
- How does the modern preference for fast foods (overly salty, spicy, and deep-fried) represent a Rajasic diet? What are its long-term health consequences?
- Have you noticed how highly stimulating foods can increase feelings of anger, restlessness, and anxiety?

कट्वम्ललवणात्युष्णतीक्ष्णरूक्षविदाहिनः
Shankara comments that these foods create heat and irritation in the body, stimulating restless thoughts. A mind filled with Rajasic food is constantly distracted by desire and anger, making meditation impossible. They ultimately result in sickness.
