The Translation
“Food that is stale, tasteless, putrid, rotten, left-over, and impure is dear to those in the mode of ignorance (Tamasic).”

Krishna describes Tamasic foods, which are dear to those in the mode of ignorance (Tamas). In Vedic hygiene and food preparation, eating stale, decomposed, or unclean food was seen as a cause of mental darkness and physical decline.

यातयामं गतरसं पूति पर्युषितं च यत्
Shankara explains that 'yāta-yāmam' refers to food that has lost its life-force. Consuming rotten or impure food covers the intellect with darkness, producing lethargy (alasya) and sleep (nidra). It destroys the capacity for discrimination.
