The Translation

“Sacrifice which is offered according to scriptural rules, by those who do not desire any reward, with the firm conviction that 'it ought to be done,' is in the mode of goodness (Sattvik).”

Commentary & Insights

Krishna defines Sattvik sacrifice (yajña). In ancient times, a yajna was a ritual offering to the deities. Krishna elevates this concept, transforming it from a mere external ritual into a psychological attitude of selfless service performed for the collective welfare.

Practical Application
1

Perform one helpful task today purely because it is needed, without expecting any thank you or return.

Self-Reflection Prompts
  • How does the attitude of 'this is my duty to perform' (yaṣṭavyam eva) protect you from disappointment when actions do not yield the desired result?
  • Can you think of a modern 'sacrifice' (e.g. community service, protecting the environment) performed in this Sattvik spirit?
