All Verses (30)
श्रीभगवानुवाच |
The Supreme Lord said: Hear now, O Partha, how by practicing Yoga with your mind attached to Me, and taking refuge in Me alone, you shall know Me fully, without doubt.
ज्ञानं तेऽहं सविज्ञानमिदं वक्ष्याम्यशेषतः |
I shall declare to you in full this knowledge together with experiential realization. Once this is understood, nothing more remains to be known in this world.
मनुष्याणां सहस्रेषु कश्चिद्यतति सिद्धये |
Among thousands of human beings, scarcely one strives for perfection; and among those who strive and succeed, scarcely one knows Me in truth.
भूमिरापोऽनलो वायुः खं मनो बुद्धिरेव च |
Earth, water, fire, air, space, mind, intellect, and ego—these eight constitute My divided material nature.
अपरेयमितस्त्वन्यां प्रकृतिं विद्धि मे पराम् |
This is My lower nature, O mighty-armed one. But know that beyond this is My higher nature, which consists of the living entities by which this entire universe is sustained.
एतद्योनीनि भूतानि सर्वाणीत्युपधारय |
Know that all living beings are born of these two natures. I am the origin and the dissolution of the entire creation.
मत्तः परतरं नान्यत्किञ्चिदस्ति धनञ्जय |
There is nothing superior to Me, O conqueror of wealth. Everything in this universe is strung on Me like pearls on a thread.
रसोऽहमप्सु कौन्तेय प्रभास्मि शशिसूर्ययोः |
O son of Kunti, I am the taste in water, the light of the moon and the sun, the sacred syllable OM in all the Vedas, the sound in space, and the ability in human beings.
पुण्यो गन्धः पृथिव्यां च तेजश्चास्मि विभावसौ |
I am the sweet fragrance of the earth, the brilliance in fire, the life-force in all living beings, and the austerity in ascetics.
बीजं मां सर्वभूतानां विद्धि पार्थ सनातनम् |
O Partha, know Me to be the eternal seed of all living beings. I am the intelligence of the intelligent, and the splendor of the splendid.
बलं बलवतां चाहं कामरागविवर्जितम् |
I am the strength of the strong, free from desire and attachment. In all living beings, O Lord of the Bharatas, I am desire that is not contrary to righteousness.
ये चैव सात्त्विका भावा राजसास्तामसाश्च ये |
Know that all states of being—whether in the mode of goodness, passion, or ignorance—are manifested by My energy. I am not in them, but they are in Me.
त्रिभिर्गुणमयैर्भावैरेभिः सर्वमिदं जगत् |
Bewildered by these three states composed of the modes of nature, this entire world does not know Me, who am superior to them and imperishable.
दैवी ह्येषा गुणमयी मम माया दुरत्यया |
This divine energy of Mine, composed of the three modes of nature, is difficult to cross over. But those who surrender to Me alone cross over this illusion.
न मां दुष्कृतिनो मूढाः प्रपद्यन्ते नराधमाः |
The wicked, the foolish, the lowest of humanity, whose wisdom has been stolen by illusion, and who possess the demoniac nature, do not surrender to Me.
चतुर्विधा भजन्ते मां जनाः सुकृतिनोऽर्जुन |
Four kinds of virtuous people worship Me, O Arjuna: the distressed, the seeker of knowledge, the seeker of wealth, and the wise, O best of the Bharatas.
तेषां ज्ञानी नित्ययुक्त एकभक्तिर्विशिष्यते |
Among these, the wise one who is constantly united with Me in single-minded devotion is the best. For I am exceedingly dear to the wise, and they are dear to Me.
उदाराः सर्व एवैते ज्ञानी त्वात्मैव मे मतम् |
All of them are indeed noble, but I consider the wise one to be My very Self. Being united in mind, they are established in Me alone as the supreme goal.
बहूनां जन्मनामन्ते ज्ञानवान्मां प्रपद्यते |
At the end of many births, the wise one surrenders to Me, realizing that Vasudeva is all that exists. Such a great soul is extremely rare.
कामैस्तैस्तैर्हृतज्ञानाः प्रपद्यन्तेऽन्यदेवताः |
Those whose wisdom has been swept away by various desires surrender to other gods, performing particular rituals, driven by their own material natures.
यो यो यां यां तनुं भक्तः श्रद्धयार्चितुमिच्छति |
Whichever form a devotee desires to worship with faith, I make that faith of theirs steady and unwavering.
स तया श्रद्धया युक्तस्तस्याराधनमीहते |
Endowed with that faith, they worship that deity and obtain their desired objects, which are in fact ordained by Me alone.
अन्तवत्तु फलं तेषां तद्भवत्यल्पमेधसाम् |
But finite is the fruit obtained by these people of small intelligence. The worshippers of the demigods go to the demigods, but My devotees come to Me.
अव्यक्तं व्यक्तिमापन्नं मन्यन्ते मामबुद्धयः |
The unintelligent think of Me, the unmanifest, as having become manifest, not knowing My supreme, imperishable, and unsurpassed nature.
नाहं प्रकाशः सर्वस्य योगमायासमावृतः |
I am not manifest to everyone, being veiled by My divine illusion. This deluded world does not know Me, the unborn and imperishable.
वेदाहं समतीतानि वर्तमानानि चार्जुन |
I know the past, the present, and the future, O Arjuna, and all living beings; but Me no one knows.
इच्छाद्वेषसमुत्थेन द्वन्द्वमोहेन भारत |
By the delusion of dualities arising from desire and aversion, O Bharata, all living beings are led into delusion from birth, O conqueror of foes.
येषां त्वन्तगतं पापं जनानां पुण्यकर्मणाम् |
But those people of virtuous deeds, whose sins have come to an end, freed from the delusion of dualities, worship Me with firm resolve.
जरामरणमोक्षाय मामाश्रित्य यतन्ति ये |
Those who strive for liberation from old age and death, taking refuge in Me, know that Brahman, the entire Self, and all action.
साधिभूताधिदैवं मां साधियज्ञं च ये विदुः |
Those who know Me as the governing principle of the material realm, the divine realm, and the sacrificial realm, can know Me even at the time of death, their minds being united with Me.
