“An eternal fragment of My own Self becomes the individual soul in the world of life. It attracts the five senses and the mind, which reside in material nature.”

ममैवांशो जीवलोके जीवभूतः सनातनः
Shankara clarifies that the division is only apparent, not real. Just as the space inside a pot (ghatākāsha) appears to be a separate fragment of the infinite space (mahākāsha) but is actually identical to it, the Jiva is apparently a fragment of Brahman due to limiting adjuncts (upadhis) like the mind and body. In truth, it is non-dual Brahman.
