“A person does not attain freedom from karma merely by abstaining from work, nor does one attain perfection by renunciation alone.”

न कर्मणामनारम्भान्नैष्कर्म्यं पुरुषोऽश्नुते
One cannot reach the state of actionless knowledge (Naiskarmya) without first performing selfless action (Karma Yoga) to purify the mind. Renunciation without mental purity is merely external show and does not lead to perfection.
