“Even a wise person acts according to their own nature. All living beings follow their nature; what can mere repression accomplish?”

सदृशं चेष्टते स्वस्याः प्रकृतेर्ज्ञानवानपि
Shankara explains that 'prakriti' here refers to the impressions (samskaras) created by past actions which shape our current temperament. Repression cannot instantly destroy these deep habits; they must be purified slowly through Karma Yoga.
