Verse 16.17 : Daivasura Sampad Vibhaga Yoga "Divine & Demonic Natures"
Verse 17 of 24
“
The Translation
“Self-conceited, obstinate, filled with the pride and madness of wealth, they perform nominal sacrifices out of vanity, ignoring scriptural rules.”
Commentary & Insights
Krishna continues to expose the hypocrisy of the demoniac. Performing sacrifices without following scriptural injunctions (avidhi-pūrvakam) was considered a serious transgression, as it corrupted the sacred alignment of rituals.
Practical Application
1
When someone offers you feedback or constructive criticism, listen fully without immediately defending yourself.
2
Align your actions with authentic values rather than performing deeds purely to impress others.

Self-Reflection Prompts
- Why does being wealthy often make people 'obstinate' (stabdhah) and unwilling to learn from others?
- How can we ensure that our spiritual practices are sincere and not just 'nominal' (nāma) shows for social status?

16.17
आत्मसम्भाविताः स्तब्धा धनमानमदान्विताः
Shankara comments that 'avidhi-pūrvakam' means doing actions without proper mental preparation, faith, or adherence to the spiritual method. They do not seek purification of the mind; they only seek social applause, rendering their actions spiritually useless.
