श्रीभगवानुवाच |

The Supreme Lord said: Fearlessness, purity of mind, steadfastness in the yoga of knowledge, charity, control of the senses, sacrifice, study of the sacred scriptures, austerity, and simplicity...

अहिंसा सत्यमक्रोधस्त्यागः शान्तिरपैशुनम् |

Non-injury, truthfulness, freedom from anger, renunciation, peacefulness, aversion to slander, compassion to all living beings, freedom from greed, gentleness, modesty, and absence of fickleness...

तेजः क्षमा धृतिः शौचमद्रोहो नातिमानिता |

Vigor, forgiveness, fortitude, purity, absence of malice, and absence of pride—these belong to one born of a divine nature, O Bharata.

दम्भो दर्पोऽभिमानश्च क्रोधः पारुष्यमेव च |

Hypocrisy, pride, arrogance, anger, harshness, and ignorance—these belong to one born of a demoniac nature, O Partha.

दैवी सम्पद्विमोक्षाय निबन्धायासुरी मता |

The divine nature is deemed to lead to liberation, and the demoniac to bondage. Do not grieve, O Pandava, for you are born with divine qualities.

द्वौ भूतसर्गौ लोकेऽस्मिन्दैव आसुर एव च |

There are two kinds of created beings in this world—the divine and the demoniac. The divine has been described at length; now hear from Me about the demoniac, O Partha.

प्रवृत्तिं च निवृत्तिं च जना न विदुरासुराः |

Demoniac persons do not know what path to follow and what path to renounce. Neither purity, nor right conduct, nor truthfulness is found in them.

असत्यमप्रतिष्ठं ते जगदाहुरनीश्वरम् |

They say: 'The universe is without truth, without moral basis, and without a God. It is born of mutual union, caused by lust—what else?'

एतां दृष्टिमवष्टभ्य नष्टात्मानोऽल्पबुद्धयः |

Clinging to such views, these lost souls of small intellect, commit cruel deeds and emerge as enemies of the world for its destruction.

काममाश्रित्य दुष्पूरं दम्भमानमदान्विताः |

Giving themselves up to insatiable desire, filled with hypocrisy, pride, and arrogance, they hold deluded beliefs through illusion, and act with impure vows.

चिन्तामपरिमेयां च प्रलयान्तामुपाश्रिताः |

Beset with immense anxieties that end only with death, they hold sensory gratification as their ultimate goal, convinced that 'this is all.'

आशापाशशतैर्बद्धाः कामक्रोधपरायणाः |

Bound by hundreds of cords of hope and expectation, devoted to lust and anger, they strive to accumulate wealth by unjust means for the gratification of their desires.

इदमद्य मया लब्धमिमं प्राप्स्ये मनोरथम् |

'This I have gained today, this desire I shall obtain; this wealth is mine, and this also shall be mine in the future.'

असौ मया हतः शत्रुर्हनिष्ये चापरानपि |

'That enemy has been slain by me, and others also I shall slay. I am the lord, I am the enjoyer, I am successful, powerful, and happy.'

आढ्योऽभिजनवानस्मि कोऽन्योऽस्ति सदृशो मया |

'I am wealthy and well-born. Who else is equal to me? I shall perform sacrifices, I shall give charity, I shall rejoice.' Thus they are deluded by ignorance.

अनेकचित्तविभ्रान्ता मोहजालसमावृताः |

Bewildered by many thoughts, caught in the net of delusion, and addicted to the gratification of desires, they fall into a foul hell.

आत्मसम्भाविताः स्तब्धा धनमानमदान्विताः |

Self-conceited, obstinate, filled with the pride and madness of wealth, they perform nominal sacrifices out of vanity, ignoring scriptural rules.

अहंकारं बलं दर्पं कामं क्रोधं च संश्रिताः |

Clinging to egoism, power, pride, lust, and anger, these malicious people mock Me in their own bodies and in those of others.

तानहं द्विषतः क्रुरान्संसारेषु नराधमान् |

These cruel, hateful, and degraded persons, I cast perpetually into demoniac wombs in the cycle of birth and death.

आसुरीं योनिमापन्ना मूढा जन्मनि जन्मनि |

Entering demoniac wombs, birth after birth, these deluded souls sink to the lowest depths, O son of Kunti, without ever reaching Me.

त्रिविधं नरकस्येदं द्वारं नाशनमात्मनः |

Lust, anger, and greed are the three gates of hell leading to the ruin of the soul. Therefore, one must abandon these three.

एतैर्विमुक्तः कौन्तेय तमोद्वारैस्त्रिभिर्नरः |

Released from these three gates of darkness, O son of Kunti, a person acts for the welfare of his soul, and thereby reaches the supreme goal.

यः शास्त्रविधिमुत्सृज्य वर्तते कामकारतः |

He who discards the injunctions of the scriptures and acts under the impulse of desire attains neither perfection, nor happiness, nor the supreme goal.

तस्माच्छास्त्रं प्रमाणं ते कार्याकार्यव्यवस्थितौ |

Therefore, let the scriptures be your authority in determining what ought to be done and what ought not to be done. Knowing what is declared in scriptures, perform your duty in this world.
